AMLO now threatens the press with putting together a weekly fake news ranking
The Mexican president anticipated that fake news will be displayed at his press conferences once a week. "There are conservatives who don't watch the morning conferences and are manipulated," he said.

Far from celebrating what was an electoral victory in 11 governorships and consolidating himself as the main national political force, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador is disengaged by the defeat in Mexico City, his electoral stronghold.

The poor election result of his protégé and chosen for the 2024 succession, Claudia Sheibaum, generated sequels in AMLO. Therefore, in his morning press conferences, he has denounced dirty war against the head of government of Mexico City and has shot at the middle class, whom he accused of "aspirational and selfish", and said he wanted to build a more "humane and supportive" middle class.

Now he is doubling the bet. Since every Monday morning the Mexican Government presents the "who's who" of gasoline, now there will be a similar section, but to denounce the media that engages in fake news.

AMLO spies on journalists

This new section against the media does not yet have a start date nor a format well defined, however, the president announced: "It will be once a week, and someone from the government will come, but we are still deciding who, because we need to analyze everything to define which news is fake."

In an ironic tone he added: "Some are going to get first place always, they will always get the gold medal. We're going to be exposing them and informing people, because there are those who believe all that." He said that there are conservative people "who do not want to see the morning conferences, so they are manipulated; if they saw the morning conferences, they would have information about what is happening, but they are left with only the information that the media offer them."

It will be once a week, and someone from the government will come, but we are still deciding who, because we need to analyze everything to present which news is fake.

Andrés Manuel López Obrador's criticism of the press has been constant since the beginning of his government, claiming that the newspapers with the highest circulation in the country have been against him. "One day they criticize me and the next they criticize me," he often says. For this reason, he has defended his morning conferences, as he claims that it is the space in which he can reply to the news.

Beware of the middle class

The announcement came after being questioned about Covid-19 deaths among people who had been fully vaccinated. In this regard, he said he had no information about those cases, but assured that if they existed, they would be limited to few. Regarding school infections, "It was eight, for the whole city." In that regard, he questioned whether the news was false.

In addition, he explained that social media spread the news that one of his sons had bought the Cruz Azul stadium. "Imagine that!" he said, denying such information.

Lopez Obrador decided to fight those he considers responsible for his electoral defeat in Mexico City: the media and the middle class. In order to do that, he will apply all the resources of the state, a recipe already known in other Latin American countries.
