US Vice President Kamala Harris will address the nation's largest annual gathering of Latino policymakers on Thursday, the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) has announced.
The event, the 38th edition of NALEO's Annual Conference, will bring together 80 speakers including US Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, US Department of Education Secretary Miguel Cardona, Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra and Kevin Cabrera, the former Florida State director for Donald Trump for President and the Republican National Committee.
While not originally on the list of speakers, on Tuesday NALEO confirmed that Harris would address the event at 4 PM on Thursday.
The event - which is still being held virtually as a result of Covid-19 protocols - begins on Wednesday afternoon with an examination of the Latino electorate, where experts will analyze how Latinos performed in last year's election and what lessons can be learned about sustaining turnout gains in the future.
Panelists will also discuss how several states' changes in voting laws may affect Latino voters' in the upcoming 2022 and 2024 elections.
Other topics on Wednesday will include Latino employment in the post Covid-19 US economy, vaccination efforts in the Latino community, census issues and the role Latino-owned small businesses in the US.
On Thursday, the event will discuss hate crimes in the US, political misinformation and disinformation, Latinas in the workforce, the American Rescue Plan, and local government revenues.
The Vice President, for her part, will take part in a session in which senior administration officials will discuss "national progress and what we plan to accomplish in the coming months and years ahead.
